Miniature Poodles

Miniature Poodles are amazingly smart as whips, easy to train, incredibly loving, eager to please hypoallergenic dogs. There are three official sizes of Poodles: Standard (over 15″ at the shoulder), Miniature (over 10″ but under 15″ at the shoulder), and Toy (10″ and under). The hypoallergenic breeds have hair, not fur, therefore require regular brushing and full grooming every month. Miniature Poodles have a lifespan of 12-15 years so plan for this breed to make it’s way into your heart! They simply adore attention and love and will show it all day long to their owners. They can get their nose out of joint when they have to share attention, but will train well based on the individual training them.

Poodles have so many desirable attributes that many people mix poodle with many other breeds to increase their life expectancy, to try to eliminate or decrease pet dander, or to increase intelligence and ease training of other breeds. Many people feel that mixed breed dogs are healthier than purebreds and while that may ring true in some cases (especially where the purebred dogs are being inbred and too closely linebred), not so much in others. You see, mixing breeds actually dilutes the gene pool which can definitely lessen the probability of some genetic disorders, but can also widens the issues that can present two or three fold because each breed will bring their own set of predisposed genetic issues to the gene pool. Mixing breeds can also create new issues that previously weren’t there.

This is why it is so important to find a breeder who does broad genetic testing and targets breed-specific issues as well. My miniature poodles are genetically tested for Degenerative Myelopathy-DM (a progressive disease of the spinal cord), Osteochondrodysplasia-OCD, Progressive Retinal Atrophy Progressive Cone Rod Dystrophy 4- PRA-CORD1-CRD4 and/or Progressive Retinal Atrophy Progressive Rod Cone Degeneration- PRA-PRCD (degeneration of retinal rod and cones, leading to blindness), Neonatal Encephalpathy- NE (a recessive developmental brain disease), and Von Willebrand Disease- VWD1 (hemophilia). All of my breeding dogs have had/will have their Companion Animal Eye Registry-CAER tests completed by a board certified veterinary ophthalmologist, and vet consultations for patellar luxation (movement of the kneecap).
